Stacey Childress on Rethinking School

My boss at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Stacey Childress, recently penned an article – Rethinking School – for Harvard Business Review as part of a broader focus on American Competitiveness. In response to woeful performance data of American students, she sees reason for optimism in blended learning:

A new generation of sophisticated adaptive courseware and schools that blend the best of teacher- and computer-delivered instruction are making personalized-learning approaches feasible and affordable, not as a replacement for teachers but as a way to give them the tools they need to become dramatically more effective.

She goes on to reference four organizations that exemplify elements of this vision: DreamBox, Rocketship, Khan Academy and School of One.
